Report from Operation Potomac, July 2000

by William Einwechter

Dear Fellow NRA Board Members,

Although National Reform Association President Jeff Ziegler will no doubt be giving a more comprehensive report on our July 13 visit to Washington, D.C., I thought it fitting to give a brief report from my perspective. First, Jeff did a superb job of organizing this trip. He worked very hard to make the day a success by countless phone calls, e-mails, and faxes to the offices of the perspective legislators to secure appointments, and by working out all the logistics of air flight, literature, schedule, etc. He deserves our heartfelt thanks. Second, we were able to distribute about 30 copies each of "Messiah the Prince," "Explicitly Christian Politics," and sample issues of The Christian Statesman to congressmen and key staffers. Third, our individual appointments went very well.

I was with the group of men who carried out the appointments in the Senate. Due to the fact that the Senators were in session debating the "death tax" all day we were not able to meet personally with any of the Senators. However, we did meet with key staffers and had a good reception. We were able to give some of the history of the NRA, state our vision for politics which centers in the crown rights of Jesus Christ over the nation, present our NRA proclamation on Christian politics, and present our literature. We were particularly pleased with our meetings with Glenn Powell (of Senator Inhofe's staff), Brian Waidman (of John Ashcroft's staff) and Mark Rogers (of Senator Santorum's staff). Each of these men were articulate Christian gentleman who desire to apply their Christian faith to the political sphere. Each has been involved in study groups on Capitol Hill in the desire of both forming and teaching a Christian worldview and how this worldview impacts the civil realm. Though they have not yet embraced the particular perspective of the NRA, they were very interested in our message and each interacted with us for some time, asking questions and explaining their own views.

All concurred that there is a kind of spiritual awakening among the staffers in the Senate, and a hunger to develop a Christian approach to politics. Lloyd Ogilve, the Senate Chaplain, was highly thought of and credited with a solid ministry of the Word to the Senators and their staffers.

All in all, it was a very productive day. More than I would have thought possible. Praise be to our King. May He hasten the day when our leaders in Washington bow the knee in covenantal submission to His reign!
