National Reform Association ==>Christian Statesman ==>May - June 2000 ==>Letters
I am in receipt of your latest issue of The Christian Statesman. In it a certain Dave Mielke "corresponds" with you regarding your excellent article "The Crime of Abortion and Its Just Punishment" (Vol. 142, No. 6). He raises the issue of ectopic (or tubal) pregnancy and claims that because it is life threatening, to mother and child, an abortion should be performed, even though it is premeditated murder. We may, he asserts, "end up having to perpetrate the lesser of two evils." I demur. God never puts us in a position where we must choose evil. There is always a biblical solution to every problem/situation we face (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Timothy 3:16-17). With regard to an ectopic pregnancy, if it can be assured that the child will die, and that the life of the mother is threatened as well in such a situation (which I am not sure can ever be the case with science), then the taking of the life of the infant would not be an act of murder at all. It would be an act of self-defense, which is biblically permitted (e.g., Exodus 22:2-3; Luke 22:36).
Dr. Gary Crampton, Virginia

My name is Odin Gonzalez and I just wanted to write you a thank you letter. Yesterday my government class was discussing what kind of qualifications we (students) thought a president must have to become the president of the U.S. I, not knowing what was to come, wrote that the president should be a Christian. My professor saw this and told me that she would make me bring that up in discussion the following day among the class to see what they thought.
Well, while thinking about it later that day, I knew that I would either need to get some information to support my view or else I was going to get attacked by all of the other students. I knew that if that happened, and I had no defense, they would not be open to Christian things that I say in that class ever again. Not wanting this to occur, I jumped on the net, and through God's direction, I came across your site on Christian Political Action in the New Millennium. These things helped me put all my thoughts together and be able to have a strong base for my belief. I want to thank you guys for putting this on the net for others to use on the Lord's behalf.
Just to let you know what happened: I was attacked by non-Christians and Christians alike on my view that the President should be a Christian. I was in the middle of a very big crowd yelling and rebutting against my every word. But thankfully, through the writings on the net, I was able to defend myself and the Christian faith. It got so bad in there that several students actually had to leave the classroom at one point or another to cool down, not excluding the teacher! I must say, it was a very heart moving discussion, by the mere fact that not even the Christians in the class found my view reasonable. I thought that some Christians would disagree, but would have never expected them ALL to attack me. I came out alive and stronger in our Lord's Word. I thank you once more and pray that the Lord blesses the NRA and what it stands for, along with all those dealing with the association. May God bless you all.
- Odin Gonzalez, Internet

Thank you for your publication The Christian Statesman. I am proud to be associated with the NRA! I use that statement when people are talking 2nd Amendment issues. Unlike the National Rifle Association, your organization is solid and uncompromising. The Lord has been "reforming" me over the last nine years. He has brought so many good teachers into my life. I've been affiliated with Southern Baptist churches all my life, so I appreciate these "new" teachings! God bless.

Greetings in the Lord! I enclose a cheque for__, as a contribution to you all's ministry. I can not understand how any real Christian can be opposed to having our civil governments operate on biblical principles.
I particularly enjoyed the article by Mr. Wilkins in the January-February 2000 issue of The Christian Statesman. I wonder, however, why you all put on the cover of the issue in which Mr. Wilkins writes the main article, a flag which he would not claim as that of his country. Mr. Wilkins is a Confederate, and regards the U.S. flag as that of a conqueror and occupier of his nation. But what he wrote applies to Christians of any nation. Grace and peace to you all.
-Greg Barnes, Missouri
Steve Wilkins Responds:
I certainly do view the Confederate flag as "the flag of my country" in the sense that "my country" did adopt that flag for its national symbol during its brief existence as a separate nation (1861-1865). The American flag is also the symbol of "my country" in that "my country" was a part of the confederation of the United States from 1781-1861.
Since 1861 the U.S. flag has increasingly stood for something quite different than that which it symbolized prior to that time. The country it presently represents bears little resemblance to that which was established in 1781 under the Articles of Confederation. We are no longer a "federal republic" but have more and more taken on the marks of an imperial state which seeks to maintain a worldwide "empire" and to control the lives of its citizens in ways and by means which would have astonished the citizens of this country (North and South) in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thus, I view the modern flag with great sense of sadness and loss. It is truly the flag of the conqueror--not merely of the Confederate States of America, but of constitutional liberty in general. Therefore the sight of the flag ought to cause all of us to repent and cry to God for mercy and for the restoration of a godly republic.
