Symposium on A Christian Political Party

by Bill Brown

Bill Brown is State Director for Christian Coalition of Georgia.

The goal of the Christian in government is to work to establish a righteous nation by calling the nation to a biblical standard and proclaim Jesus as Lord over the nation.

We live in a nation that has at its foundation a representative form of government. As Christians this is consistent with our biblical model where the people of God had heads of household (and on up) as a representative form of government over them. The political process in this nation calls for a party system that casts votes for presidential candidates and provides help or hindrance to other political candidates and issues. We cannot as Christians avoid the party process if we are to be represented in the political process.

The answer to the question is found by determining where the Christian can be most effective in providing representation for our Lord. If there are no opportunities or even few opportunities to work for the Christian perspective in candidates or issues within the Republican or Democratic parties, then we must consider forming a new party in which we can work. The obvious problem is that winning in politics takes numbers. When will we have the numbers to accomplish the much-needed changes outside an existing party?

The solution to our dilemma is at the grassroots of our nation. We must work and pray for revival. When God raises up His people in numbers, then they will demand righteousness in our nation. The needed numbers will come from the grassroots up and if organized as a new party or the redirecting of an existing party, the influence will be dramatic. For now, our efforts need to be on existing channels of party work, when needed to accomplish our goals, but our emphasis should be on discipling our brothers in Christ and the lost to Christ so that they understand the role of civil government. Then we will have our representative form of government reflect the righteousness of His people instead of the rebellion of our day.
